The Black Vulture is a
highly numerous scavenging bird of prey found in the Americas. It
will often be found nearby to human habitation where it will scavenge
scraps and carrion from rubbish tips. These large birds will be
found in their hundreds at the site of a large carcass such as a
dead farm animal, with many birds circling in the air whilst those
on the ground are eating their fill. They are regularly seen with
Turkey vultures who have an acute sense of smell enabling them to
locate carrion before the Black Vulture which relies solely upon
its vision for finding food. It must be pointed out that Black vultures
are capable of taking live prey if necessary choosing weak or young
specimens.
Despite having a relatively high wing loading for its body size
the Black Vulture will usually soar at greater height than the Turkey
Vulture this may be so that they can see when Turkey Vultures have
discovered a carcass.
