The Merlin is our smallest bird of prey at the centre and is the smallest falcon found in the British Isles. They can be remarkably brave birds and commonly take prey as large if not larger than itself. They are an aggressive hunter of small birds such as larks and pipits and will often engage in rapid agile chases in pursuit of their prey. They often launch themselves into small flocks of birds targeting weak individuals for an easy meal.

Merlin Facts

Name: Merlin – Falco colambarius
Size: 25-31cm
Wingspan: 50-62cm
Range: Northern Europe, Asia, and America. Is migratory
Conservation: Once common across the UK particularly on moorland, however pesticide usage combined with habitat destruction has caused their numbers to dwindle. However moorland management for game has recently seen the Merlin benefit, being to small to take game species.
