The Tawny Owl is Britain’s
commonest owl and is the owl that is associated with the classic
twit-two or hoot sound, although they make a variety of other calls
including a murderous screech. The Tawny Owl is a skilled hunter
and seeks prey almost exclusively at night, taking a variety of
small birds from their roosts along with small mammals. They will
also eat insects and worms and have even been known to catch fish
from ponds and rivers. The Tawny Owl is aggressively territorial
when breeding and will attack other creatures that approach their
nest sites and amazingly have been known to injure humans on several
occasions. Tawny Owls are highly nocturnal, roosting in trees during
the day when their presence may be noted by the loud taunts of mobbing
birds.
